Mums – Expect to be Spoilt This Weekend

May 06, 2015

Retailers across the country will be kept busy over the coming days as shoppers are expected to buy up big in the lead up to Mother’s Day.

National Retail Association CEO Trevor Evans said jewellery, flowers and perfume continue to be the most popular gifts of choice for children, young and old wanting to spoil the most important woman in their life.

“When it comes to our mums and grandmothers, we tend to splash out and this Mother’s Day will be no different,” Mr Evans said.

“In recent years, retail sales for Mother’s Day have increased, on average, by 2.8 per cent year-on-year, and we expect to see similar figures again for 2015.

“If this trend continues, sales this weekend could come close to $1.4 billion.”

Mr Evans said while gifts are always a hit, cafes and restaurants will be packed to the rafters.

“Mother’s day breakfasts are a much loved tradition for many families and although, breakfast in bed is a nice gesture, more and more of us are choosing cafes to dine out,” he said.

“Restaurants will also be bustling with big crowds looking to enjoy a Sunday lunch, so don’t forget to make a reservation ahead of time.”

Mr Evans said for those who leave presents and bookings to the last minute, gift vouchers are always well received.

“One of the things most mums cross their fingers for this time of year is some time out. Pampering treatments such as massages, facials and pedicures are a perfect last minute gift that won’t disappoint.

“Whether it’s her favourite flowers, a gift voucher for a much needed massage or a carefree breakfast at the local café, the NRA would like to wish all Mums a very special day this Sunday,” he said.
