Kate Carnell appointment to small business ombudsman a win for retailers

February 01, 2016

The National Retail Association (NRA) has today congratulated former Chief Executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kate Carnell, on her appointment to the role of small business ombudsman.

NRA CEO Trevor Evans applauded the government for recognising Ms Carnell’s wide ranging achievements in the business sector.

“This appointment is a major win for small retail businesses who will now have access to an independent advocate who will ensure the government creates the best conditions for the growth of small businesses,” Mr Evans said.

“We believe Ms Carnell’s accomplishments, which include running her own highly successful business, becoming a respected voice of authority as a media commentator, and developing a reputation for fairness and balance during her tenure as ACT Chief Minister, make her the perfect fit for the newly-created, five-year role.

Ms Carnell will head up a small team that will offer a range of services to small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 100 employees.

“We’re pleased the government has acknowledged the significant contribution small businesses make toward the Australian economy by creating this important position, one that give tens of thousands of small businesses in Australia the chance to be heard.”

Trevor Evans is available for interviews. Contact the NRA’s media unit on (07) 3240 0163.

The NRA is Australia’s largest and most diverse retail industry organisation, and has been representing the interests of the retail, fast food and broader service sector for almost 100 years.
