Not since late 2011 has Brisbane seen the current levels of advertised job vacancies in retail.
The average growth rates for advertised job vacancies since January 2014 has been 6.6% for retail managers, 7.2% for retail assistants, and 7.0% for all positions.
“The retail industry is where most people will gain their first paid employment and where their employability skills will either be learned, or applied for the first time,” said Yvonne Williams, Director of Training and Industry Projects at the National Retail Association (NRA).
“Retail allows people to develop core, transferable skills that they can carry with them, as they progress along a career pathway in retail, or move to another industry,” said Mrs. Williams.
Such skills include communication, teamwork, problem solving, self-management, planning and organising, and initiative.
Retail is also a great industry to find opportunities to re-enter the workforce.
Projections by the Australian Government, Department of Employment, indicate that across the next four years, the number of new retail jobs in Greater Brisbane will increase by 4,960 positions.
