The spotlight is shining bright on fashion but for all the wrong reasons with a consistent flow of reports over the past 6 months of clothing companies failing to pay their overseas manufacturing workers enough to meet their basic needs, with a handful of companies accused of slave labour.
Increased risk of child labour and forced labour within the garment industry is an issue not only for companies producing their clothes overseas, but for consumers as well.
Although international chain H&M scored highly in studies conducted earlier this year compared to their competition, workers are facing problems such as low wages, fixed-term contracts, forced overtime and loss of job if pregnant.
In order to tackle this issue the company is collaborating with trade unions and governments to improve the conditions of their workers.
