Retail Panel: how many more supermarket chains are too many?

August 07, 2018

Every Thursday, our CEO Dominique Lamb and a panel of retail experts discuss retail’s hottest topics on ABC Radio. Below are some insights from last Thursday’s discussion.

Food delivery service Foodora has announced it is pulling out of Australia.

Foodora is a food delivery service that launched in Australia in 2015.

While food delivery services continue to grow in popularity with consumers due to their convenience, Foodora has recently announced it will close operations in Australia after facing charges from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

The Fair work Ombudsman has accused the business of sham contracting and underpayment.

Supermarket chain Kaufland, prepares to launch in Queensland.

German supermarket giant, Kaufland, is closing in on the Australian market.

The company has purchased a Bunnings Warehouse site on the Gold Coast in preparation for their launch.

Consumers spend about a third of their lives at supermarkets and shops, purchasing groceries and other household items – but retail panel host, Steve Austin, raised the question, “How many supermarket chains are too many?”

Will Supermarkets go the way of the apparently saturated food delivery market?

International markets need to have long term plans when considering breaking into the Australian Market. ALDI provides a perfect example, currently investing hundreds of millions of dollar in refurbishing and revamping as looks to rebuild momentum in the Australian market.

Will the launch of a new chain in Australia force already established stores to close and prices to drop in order to stay afloat in a flooded market?
