Retailers welcome NSW Government’s move to reform Boxing Day trading laws

March 02, 2015

The National Retail Association commended NSW Premier Mike Baird and Treasurer Andrew Constance on its announcement that the Government will tackle unfair trading laws across the state.

NRA Chief Executive Officer Trevor Evans said the reform would relieve pressure on retailers who are being punished because of where they choose to do business.

“Under the current Retail Trading Act, retailers in the Sydney Trading Precinct (including the CBD, Broadway, Moore Park and Bondi Junction) are permitted to trade on Boxing Day, while most other retailers are restricted from trading,” Mr Evans said.

“The retail sector in NSW is one of the largest employers and trainers of young people entering the workforce. The Government needs to allow the industry the opportunity to grow and strengthen the economy.

Meanwhile, consumers are turning to online, overseas-based retailers to bag their post-Christmas bargains.

“Online retailers have the ability to meet consumer need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with most of the money inflow going offshore yet local NSW retailers are being held back from making a cent by outdated laws forbidding them to open their doors on this key trading day.

“It is time for NSW legislation to be on par with the other states like Victoria who have removed restrictions for retailers on Boxing Day.”

Restricted trading hours will continue to apply for Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Anzac Day (until 1pm) and Christmas Day will remain restricted trading days.

The NRA is Australia’s largest and most diverse retail industry organisation, and has been representing the interests of the retail, fast food and broader service sector for almost 100 years.
